About Us
For over 275 years the hotel has been welcoming customers through its doors. It is a world-renowned destination for anyone who loves walking and fishing and outdoor pursuits.
There are very strong links with fishing, in particular, given that the hotel is named after one of the authors of The Compleat Angler, Charles Cotton, which he co-wrote with his very good friend Sir Izaak Walton. Charles Cotton was born at Beresford Hall, less than 3 miles from Hartington, which was set high above Beresford Dale. Unfortunately, over centuries the hall fell into disrepair and all that remains of Charles’s birthplace is a tower, which stands just to the east of where the hall once stood.
Whilst the Charles Cotton Hotel has retained its links with walking and fishing, the hotel today is the perfect base for anyone wishing to explore the Peak District National Park, whether walking, cycling, horseriding or driving. Hartington itself is surrounded by unspoilt countryside, yet is within easy reach of the towns of Buxton, Leek, Bakewell and Ashbourne. Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are only a short drive away.
As well as offering stylish rooms, the hotel offers fine dining in our recently refurbished Cotton Suite, which is also ideal for private parties and wedding receptions. For less formal dining there are tables in our bar/bistro where you can enjoy a ‘lite bite’ or one of our daily specials. When the sun shines there is also ample outdoor seating on our front terrace or secluded rear garden. The hotel is also an ideal venue for business meeings, off-site board meetings, corporate activities and team-building events.
